The essential role of a basketball player in the defense part of the team is to prevent any balls their opponents throw from entering the goal. Defense players achieve this aim through a combination of strategies and moves to either grab the ball or push it out of their opponent's hands.

Defense strategies in basketball require the player to make rapid footwork, have stamina and have an in-depth understanding of the game. A common strategy of defense players is the man-to-man defense which involves the defensive player (defense) guarding a particular offensive player (forward) in the opposing team. This means that the defense is to follow the forward on the court and prevent them from either getting the ball or passing to another player.
